Part of becoming a CareDriver is to complete a Child Abuse & Neglect Check (CANS). Each state has its own set of rules and steps to complete this check. Below you will find more information on each state's steps to complete the CANS check:
Arizona:
As an Arizona CareDriver, you must request your records by filling out the DCS-1083A form. Arizona will email your results directly to HopSkipDrive. Please follow the steps below to complete the request.
- Email support for a copy of the form, then follow instructions to complete the form
- Have your fingerprint clearance card available; the form will ask for the clearance card number
- Once you have completed the form, email it to records@hopskipdrive.com. HopSkipDrive will submit on your behalf to dcscentralregistry@azdcs.gov.
Colorado:
This is a check of the Colorado Department of Human Services’ (CDHS) Trails database for information to determine if the applicant has been identified as having a finding of child abuse or neglect.

DC:
Washington DC accepts online submissions of child abuse and neglect searches. Below are the steps to complete before submitting through the online portal here. Links to the form and detailed instructions can be found on the website, and are also attached below.
- Email support for a copy of the form
- The form should be typed or handwritten in ink with block letters.
- By following the link above, you can easily complete the form typewritten.
- Applications may be scanned or photographed with a cell phone or digital camera and then must be submitted via secure file upload on the Child and Family Services website.
- You must either have the application notarized or submit the application with a government-issued photo ID.
- In order to find a notary, we recommend searching online for a notary near you. UPS stores tend to offer notary services.
- CFSA processes requests within 45 days of receiving the application.
- Results will be sent directly to HopSkipDrive.
Texas:
As a Texas CareDriver, you must request an individual Texas Department of Family and Protective Services Central Registry Abuse and Neglect check on him or herself. Please follow the steps below to complete the request.
- Email support for a copy of the form
- Forms must be typed (electronically filled-out) for legibility. By following this link, you quickly and easily complete the form from your computer or device.
- Section 5- Leave this section blank. Texas will release results to the individual requesting the search, so please forward your results to records@hopskipdrive.com once your background check has been completed.
- Have the form notarized. In order to find a notary, we recommend searching online for a notary near you. UPS stores tend to offer notary services.
- Submit the form via email to TXAbuseNeglectBGC@dfps.state.tx.us and copy records@hopskipdrive.com
- Once your background check has been completed and you have received the results, please forward the results to HopSkipDrive - records@hopskipdrive.com.
Virginia:
This is a search completed by the Virginia Department of Social Services by reviewing their Central Registry System for information to determine if the applicant has been identified as having a finding of child abuse or neglect.
