Rides with the In-App Recording AQ require video and audio recording of the interior of the vehicle while a rider is in the car, improving safety for you and the riders. When you obtain the In-App Recording Advanced Qualification, you enable recording on your phone during those rides. Recordings are securely stored and only active during times when a rider is in the vehicle on select rides.
| Pilot program: this Advanced Qualification is currently available by invitation in select areas only. |

To enable In-App Recording, you'll need:
- At least 3GB of available storage on your phone to temporarily store the video file. If you don't currently have 3 GB of storage available, delete unused files to free up space.
- A phone mount to ensure stable, clear recordings. Don't have a mount? Learn how to request one here.
- Camera and audio permissions enabled for HopSkipDrive. You will be asked to enable these permissions as part of the in-app walkthrough.
Completing Rides with In-App Recording
Once you have enabled the In-App Recording Advanced Qualification, you'll be eligible to claim rides with the In-App Recording requirement. During these rides, recording will start, stop, and upload automatically.
Preparing for the ride
On any day when you have an In-App Recording ride claimed, you'll see a confirmation screen when you open the app for the first time. In your phone's settings, check that you have enough storage available and that you have granted the CareDriver app camera and microphone permissions. If you do not have enough available storage, delete unneeded files to free up space.
Tap I'm ready to confirm that you have the necessary storage and permissions.
Before beginning the ride, place your phone vertically in the mount. Using your front-facing camera, confirm that the phone is placed so that both the back seat and driver are visible.
During the ride
Recording begins automatically when you tap Pick up [rider]. Whenever the recording is live, you'll see recording icon, as shown below. The recording includes audio and video.

Complete the ride as usual. When you complete drop-off, the recording stops. You’ll see a brief message asking you to keep the app open while recording is processed. Once the message disappears you are free to close the app or continue with your next ride.
Privacy and security
What is recorded: recording is live when at least one rider is in the vehicle on a ride with an In-App Recording requirement.
What is NOT recorded: the app will not record any time outside an active In-App Recording ride with a rider in the vehicle. This means the app will not record the drive to the first pickup or after the final drop-off, as well as any personal app or phone use and any time outside a HopSkipDrive ride with an In-App Recording requirement.
Recording access and storage: Ride recordings are uploaded and stored securely after the ride is complete. They do not remain on your device after upload is complete and CareDrivers do not have access to in-ride recordings.
HopSkipDrive safety teams may review ride recordings, including the use of AI to identify possible violations of HopSkipDrive's Community Guidelines. Some recordings may be provided to Ride Organizers if requested.
